Business Lessons from Spiders
(from my Business Lessons from nature series)
Spiders are interesting and busy animals.
And we can learn many things from them to apply in our businesses.
The one skill they have which is the primary focus of this article is targeting.
Spiders are able to work out where and when they should build their web. It isn’t random.
Firstly, some species build webs and hunt at night, some during the day.
Secondly, the location is often closely related to the flight paths and food preferences of their prey — mostly flying insects of course.
In business, we need to know who, where and when to target in order to capture the attention of, and then the patronage of our clients.
Many business owners don’t target their efforts well enough. Not in their choice of marketing channels, nor in the specific type of client they want.
Spiders understand that reward must come from effort. It takes effort to build a web, and it takes time and effort to wait for and then capture their prey when it flies into the web. They can’t waste either if they want to survive.
And neither can the business owner.
